2020 iPhone Models to Include 3D ToF Sensor in Rear Camera Setup: The Next Big Thing in Mobile Techn

Leaving the design aside, the rest of the new report is in line with what we've heard so far from Ming-Chi Kuo. All iPhone variants will have OLED panels but with different camera setups. The 5.4-inch will have a dual setup, the 6.1-inch will come in two flavors - with two and three rear cameras while the 6.7-inch model will stick to the triple-camera setup. The more expensive models (the 6.1-inch with the three cameras and the 6.7-inch) will also feature 3D ToF sensors.

A new supply chain report from Macotakara today sheds new light on the sizing details of the 2020 iPhone lineup. The report also includes one notable caveat compared to what other reports have widely claimed we can expect from the iPhone 12 lineup in terms of design.

2020 iPhone Models to Include 3D ToF Sensor in Rear Camera Setup: Report

Two of the iPhones set to be released in 2020 will feature 3D sensing rear camera setups with time-of-flight (ToF) camera lenses, according to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo who shared the info in a note to investors that was obtained by MacRumors.

All three of the new iPhones are also expected to feature a front-facing camera system with Face ID, which deviates a bit from some rumors that have suggested an under-display fingerprint sensor could be coming to some 2020 iPhone models.

We predict that three new 2H20 iPhone models will all be equipped with front Face ID, and two of the new models will provide rear ToF. We estimate that shipments of iPhone models equipped with front and rear VCSEL (front structure light and rear ToF) will be 45mn units in 2020.

Kuo goes on to say that a rear time-of-flight camera would bolster photo quality and offer new and improved AR applications. Apple and Huawei are believed to be the "most aggressive brand vendors" supporting 5G and ToF in 2020.

Rumors suggest Apple is planning to release three iPhones in 2020, but in new sizes. Apple is said to be working on 5.4 and 6.7-inch high-end iPhones with OLED displays, which would presumably be the devices to adopt the 3D-capable rear camera systems, and a lower-cost 6.1-inch model with an OLED display.

It is, but with longer range. The idea's the same: Apple's Face ID-enabling TrueDepth camera also shoots out an array of infrared lasers, but can only work up to a few feet away. The rear lidar sensors on the iPad Pro and iPhone 12 Pro work at a range of up to 5 meters.

Microsoft's old depth-sensing Xbox accessory, the Kinect, was a camera that had infrared depth-scanning, too. In fact, PrimeSense, the company that helped make the Kinect tech, was acquired by Apple in 2013. Now, we have Apple's face-scanning TrueDepth and rear lidar camera sensors.

Further, the analysts have also predicted a 3D Time of Flight (ToF) sensor as one of the lenses on the rear camera system of the iPhone 12 Pro models. The iPhone 12 Pro models are expected to come in 6.7-inch and 6.1-inch OLED screen sizes and both could come with triple cameras at the back.

Apart from the two iPhone 12 Pro models, there will be another 6.1-inch OLED iPhone 12 variant, though it will have dual rear camera setup. A fourth iPhone 12 variant with a smaller 5.4-inch OLED display will also come with two back cameras. Both the models will have 4GB RAM, while the iPhone 12 Pro models will ship with 6GB RAM, up from 4GB on the existing iPhone 11 Pro series.

As per a Digitimes report (via GizChina), unlike the iPhone 12 series, all the phones in the iPhone 13 series are expected to be equipped with LiDAR sensors. The iPhone 13 series is tipped to get Direct Time-of-Flight (D-ToF) technology. These sensors will be provided by a US-based company called II-VI, which will be entering Apple's supply chain for its next-generation iPhone models. As per the report, the firm will manufacture VCSEL chips that will be used in ToF LiDAR sensors for Apple.

The report also claims that the rear-camera setup of the iPhone 13 will be slightly different from its 2020 counterpart as it is likely to have more number of holes. While the number of lenses could remain the same, the number of sensors is likely to increase. The overall effect of this change would be that the iPhone 13 will come with a better 3D sensing module.

Furthermore, the report states that Apple would streamline VCSEL chip in the front camera setup and that the phone's 3D sensing capabilities could improve dramatically, which includes reducing the volume of the structured light 3D sensing module, that is, the notch.

The S20 Ultra packs more photographic possibilities compared to its S20 and S20 Plus sister models, too, thanks to a quad-camera configuration that features an additional time-of-flight (ToF) depth sensor, a higher-resolution primary camera, and a longer focal length tele-camera.

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claiming in his latest report that two of the 2020 iPhones will feature a rear time-of-flight (ToF) 3D depth sensor for better augmented reality features and portrait shots, via MacRumors.

2020 is shaping up to be the year that Apple embraces Time of Flight sensors, with new evidence indicating at least some versions of the new iPhone will feature the depth-tracking camera tech. While typically found alongside regular cameras, ToF sensors generally rely on light invisible to human eyes, tracking the distance to objects in the room.

Or, that is, to select models of iPhone. Digging through the iOS 14 code, 9to5Mac has found evidence indicating that two versions of the next-generation iPhone will include Time of Flight sensors. That leads them to conclude that the references are for the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max, the successors to 2019's flagship iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max.

Apple is coming up with the latest version of iPad Pro and they are right now called as 2020 iPad Pro until the company announces some official name. The next-generation iPad Pro will come up with all sorts of new features including the triple rear camera setup similar to the iPhone 11 Pro series.

Posted by Phonearena, the iPhone 12 renders imagine the phone with a design reminiscent to that of iPhone 4/5/SE. The rear panel of the phone features squarish camera bump, with four sensors and LED flash at the top right corner, while the fascia has a notch-toting display. Speaking of the notch, Apple may shrink the notch on iPhone 12 a little instead of completing eliminating it, as seen in previous renders. The slim notch will give iPhone 12 users more screen real estate for immersive viewing. Furthermore, the alert slider and volume rocker are uniformly spaced on the right spine, while the left edge houses power button. 2ff7e9595c
